JABA* (the Jefferson Area Board for Aging) provides services for seniors and their families, such as, urgently needed health care and nutrition programs, as well as intergenerational programs, that promote healthy aging in Central Virginia.

JABA operates an Adult Care Center in Charlottesville, for residents of the city of Charlottesville, and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. They offer a fun, caring, safe environment for any adult who needs assistance with daily health or personal care activities. Guided by the specific needs of a personalized care plan, the certified staff in a fully licensed facility enables your loved one to remain at home longer. JABA’s Greene County Community Center is open for meals, activities, field trips and socializing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:00 AM to noon culminating with a hot meal served on the days the center is open. There is also an onsite gift shop merchandised and run by the center participants. In addition, home delivered meals and food bags are distributed out of the center to elders in the area. JABA’s Greene County Community Center is staffed with a nurse, a center manager, a volunteer coordinator, and a geriatric case manager is available to visit as needed.

The nurse, working closely with the clients, caregivers and primary physicians, provides screenings, monitoring of ongoing health conditions, prescription assistance and counseling, treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, and other services. JABA’s Geriatric Case Manager can provide an assessment for seniors followed by assistance in locating resources from JABA or the community-at-large. These services assist in enabling clients to live independently for as long as possible. Examples of service include: the provision of home delivered meals, supplying Ensure, access to medical equipment, referrals to home health-care providers, and friendly visitors. The case manager visits the community center and makes home visits, in addition to seeing clients at her office.

JABA provides intergenerational volunteer opportunities, both at the center and in the community at large.
